Identify what the School for Advanced Segmental
Paving can provide to contractors? (Steve Jones)
MAIN GOAL FOR COURSE: Skills Training
Attendees: Foremen and Superintendents
ASP 201= Course #1, Communicating the Principles of Segmental Paving.
Designed the first course for the school
Course ASP 201
- Begin
the course with a roundtable
- Teach techniques to students
- Assign
students to instruct parts of the manual to the other students
- Evaluate
students instructing (Evaluated by students and instructor)
- Practice
laying techniques
- Hands-on
Only contractors
with previous experience in the mason industry should be attending
the class. If class does not fill up, then look out to those individuals
who have no previous training that can be trained. Students will
be pre-determined before the class after completion of the required
questionnaire.
Course ASP 201 should take about 2 ½ days to complete. Students
will receive classroom time as well as hands-on-training.
Why did founders choose this process? All founders expressed interest
in the foremen to become teachers.
All students will follow guidelines given to them before the course
to know what is expected of them while attending the course.
Are founders exempt from Course ASP 201? No, they should not be
exempt. Founders need to set the standards and be good examples.
The question was asked, why attend the class if someone has been
laying pavers for 5 years or more? The goal for the student is to
leave the school with the ability to teach others through the act
of communicating. It is harder to communicate the process with someone
than it is to teach. Foremen have the knowledge but are unable to
teach (Steve Jones). As the school evolves, vision will need to
be changed (Bob Goossens).
For course ASP 201, the instructor will have a checklist that each
student will need to follow and be evaluated on.
Title for Course ASP 201
"Communicating the Principles of Segmental Paving"
Course ASP 201 will not be classified as a Pre-requisite class.
The founders determined that the name pre-requisite is misleading.

Bill Schneider brought
up the possibility of holding OSHA Trainings at the school. Safety
should be covered at all course levels within the classes (Steve
Jones).
A suggestion was to provide
a New Technology Course, but Steve Jones stated we can't cure the
world all at once. Technology course could be taught later on but
the main focus should stay with the skills course.
Things that might be needed for the school…
- Goggles
- Hard hats
- Ear Plugs
Fred Adams would
like to see an informative course on Silica.
Steve Jones would like to see a course on layout.
Please take a look at the course syllabuses for ASP 201 and ASP 202.
