Welcome to the latest edition of the Founders Update.
In this edition I would like to keep everyone informed of the latest updates and information related to the School for Advanced Segmental Paving (SASP) and will be discussing the following topics:
The summer months away from the podium and instruction allowed for time to finalize the revision of the curriculum for the HARDSCAPE CHEMICAL CERTIFICATION (HCC) course. By doing so, it provides students with a take away reference manual for the proper application procedures, tools, and equipment used for joint sand stabilization, cleaning, sealing and stripping of pavers. The summer also allowed me time to work closely with the PAVE TECH staff in Prior Lake, MN during the installation of a backyard patio. The patio included adjacent areas of clay and concrete pavers with some natural stone inlays which provided a nice way to break up some of the hard lines within the patio. The patio also included the installation of wall units that were formed around a large boulder to form a large “V” shaped planter box. Additionally wall units were also used to make a round planter box at the base of a gazebo. The entire process was filmed by the Hometime video crew and the episode aired on the 30th of Sept, 2006 on various syndicated channels, and will re-air in spring of 2007. (Copies of DVD video will be available at a later date.) The whole project was a great learning experience for me working with so many different materials and dedicated professionals.

PERMEABLE PAVER SYSTEMS
In September, the SASP was busy getting the 5600 square foot area ready for the first PERMEABLE PAVER SYSTEMS course. With unconditional help from Bill Schneider’s LPS Pavement Company, site preparation and mechanical installation from David Schneider and his crew and technical expertise from the presenter, Chuck Taylor of APT, the introductory class was an enormous success. The one day overview type class provided insight on the storm water management process including history and theory to nineteen students from all across the U.S. The course included demonstrations on the proper installation of the open graded 3” base aggregate, the intermediate layer of ¾” aggregate, and screeding the 3/8” bedding layer. Mechanical installation was also explained and demonstrated. Success of this first course can also be contributed to the numerous product and vendor donations Thanks to Paveloc Industries, Inc. for their very generous donation of all of the permeable pavers, Steve Jones has decided to upgrade them to Paver Patron status. Thanks to Anchor Retaining wall systems for their donation of Free standing wall units to separate areas within the site, and thanks to Bobcat Plus for the use of their T250 track loader for the class. Friends and Founders in attendance included Volkmar Helmenstein and his son Roland, and Russ Heitman. Feedback from the class has been great and we look forward to the next course scheduled for 17 April, 2007

SASP Invited to Hardscape North America
ICPI has invited the SASP to hold classes during the Hardscape North America (HNA) trade show held in Nashville, TN. http://www.hardscapenorthamerica.com/woh/ which will take place in March 2007.
The one day course titled HANDS-ON BEST PRACTICES FOR PAVER INSTALLATION is an abbreviated foundation skills course with the application of industry standards and “best Practices” for constructing segmental pavements. The indoor classroom portion will provide the background and framework for the course and the hands-on outdoor activity will be the major portion of the training. The two courses are scheduled for the 9th and 10th of March, 2007.
The second annual Founders meeting is also scheduled during the HNA for the 8th of March and will be held at the Opryland Resort and Convention Center. Time TBA |

| The following simple time saving tip is used during the first lift of base material. To check the height of that first lift, place the head of your base rake against edge of the base material to quickly judge the height of the lift. When using a BaseRAKE, the (near 4”) height coincides with the suggested lift height, and saves time from having to measure down from edges or any string line which will still need to occur for the subsequent lifts and final grading. |

Train the Trainer
I am pleased to announce that I will be attending a continuing education course titled Train the Trainer sponsored by National Association of Home Builders (NAHB&NCMA) which will be held in Herndon, VA on the 29th and 30th of November. Follow up from the course will be addressed in the next founders update.
