Since the Last Update, the School for
Advanced Segmental Paving has been very busy. Beside Hosting the Grand Opening on the 29th of October and obtaining financial supporters through the School’s Sponsorship Program, we have been busy getting the curriculum and the training arena ready for the first week of class which was held last week 05-07 December, 2005. It is obvious by the 6” of snow that is outside of the school arena door that winter is upon us. The good part is that the temperature inside is a comfortable 62° F which means that the School for Advanced Segmental Paving is now in full swing.

A student foremen demonstrates to the others, how to set up and use the Laser Level for establishing proper elevations, which was then put to practical use.

The first class, Team Teaching for Foremen was completed, and according to the six student attendees, “It was a great class to help teaching my crew some of the tips and techniques that will help us be successful.” The feedback that was received during this class and at the end of course evaluation is greatly appreciated, and will be used to enhance the next course. It has been determined that some of the lesson topics should be combined with others, while additional changes include a specified area within the arena with a typical subgrade ready for compaction, and another area that will be ready for the installation of base material.
Along with the Best practices which were contributed to the school by some of the Founders, additional tips and techniques were brought out from the class foremen who have been using them in their field applications.
In the photo to below, Alex Hartman from BC Pavers demonstrates how a splitter can be used to cut the soldier course saving time from the often used method of dry cutting each paver.

Although the first class only had six students, they were very proud of their accomplishments, the training and techniques that were obtained, and were proud to show their new school Pride shirts.

|
After the last of the topics were taught by the student foremen and the dust settled on their small sample patio, Certificates of Achievement were handed out. Below is Thomas Martin from Fred Adams Paving receiving his certificate of achievement.

With the completion of any class, I was collecting my notes of the list of changes that we will incorporate into the next class, Since I know that with good feedback from students, each class of the School for Advanced Segmental Paving will only get better and better.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank the following companies for sending us students for this pilot course during this busy time of the year:
LPS Pavement Company, Oswego, IL
Krugel Cobbles, Lake Bluff, IL
Fred Adams Paving Company, Morrisville, NC
BC Pavers, Renton WA |
